The University of Macedonia of Economic and Social Sciences, is the second and younger university of Thessaloniki, established by Government decree No 147 of April 10 1990. It was at first formed under the name of "The Graduate School of Industrial Studies of Thessaloniki", and it first functioned during the academic year 1957-58. In 1958 it was renamed "Graduate Industrial School of Thessaloniki". In 2007-00 celebrated its 50 years.

The Department of Balkan, Slavic and Oriental Studies is an inter-disciplinary department, founded by the Presidential Degree 363/20-9-1996, and welcomed its first students in September 1998. Both the entrance and the size of each entering class are determined by the laws on tertiary education. For the 2007-2008 academic year, the entering class has had a size of 70 secondary education graduates and 4 university and higher education graduates. The main mission of the Department of B.S.O.S., according to its founding degree, is "to cultivate and further the knowledge, the history and the culture of the Balkan, Slavic and Oriental countries and to study and develop the economic, social and political relations of these countries with Greece"
